Version 6 of the FSSC 22000 standard was published on April 1, 2023: what's new?

Published on: 26/04/2023

The main reasons for updating FSSC 22000 are as follows:

  • Integrate the requirements of ISO 22003-1 version 2022 (requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of food safety management systems),

  • Reinforce requirements to help organizations contribute to achieving the UN's sustainable development goals,

  • Integrate feedback from the version 6 development survey, which received almost 2000 responses.

Version 6 will benefit from a 12-month transition period to enable organizations to prepare for the new version, and certified bodies to implement it and obtain accreditation. The first audits for version 6 will start on April 1, 2024, and all organizations must complete the V6 upgrade audit by March 31, 2025.

The main changes in this version concern :

  • Realignment of food chain categories in accordance with ISO 22003-1:2022

  • Expansion of scope to include trade and brokerage (FII) and removal of agriculture and FSSC 22000-Quality from the system

  • Integrating requirements for food quality and safety culture and quality management

  • New requirements for quality control, food losses and waste, and equipment management

  • Reinforcement of existing additional requirements in Part 2 of the system, including but not limited to allergen management and environmental monitoring

  • Modification and clarification of certification process requirements

  • The addition of a QR code on FSSC 22000 certificates for improved traceability
