Conclusions of the ECOFISH project (assessment of environmental impacts over the entire life cycle of canned and semi-canned fish)

Published on: 18/01/2024

The ECOFISH project, financed by measure 26 of the FEAMP, and which ran from 2021 to 2023, established an assessment of the environmental impacts over the entire life cycle of canned and semi-canned fish (from fishing to final consumption of the product including the end-of-life of the packaging). Alongside 9 motivated companies involved in the construction of the data, CITPPM piloted this project with the contribution of expertise from CTCPA, INRAE and XJ Conseil.

After two years' work, the ECOFISH project has come to a successful conclusion. eco-design approaches at industry level, based on case studies using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method, and the development of a tool for calculating the environmental impact of products over their entire life cycle.. This tool aims to improve the environmental performance of companies involved in the canning and semi-canning of fish (tuna, sardines, mackerel, soups and spreads, salted and marinated anchovies), covering the various stages in the product life cycle.

Jean-François FEILLET, Quality Director at Chancerelle and President of CITPPM, talks about the ECOFISH project, which he believes is a major step forward in the development of the company, " purther understanding of the environmental impact of products. The provision of a simplified tool should make it possible to propose operational responses to the need to take environmental issues into account in product design". The life cycle analyses carried out on Chancerelle's products have had the following results These " very interesting results " have enabled us to " identify key impact factors and potential levers for improvement (e.g. packaging)".

ECOFISH is an innovative, exemplary project that meets the expectations of professionals and key stakeholders concerned by the environmental improvement of products!
