Chlorates are ions (ClO3-) generated during the disinfection of drinking water by chlorine, either in the form of chlorine dioxide or hypochlorite.
The European Commission has partially revised the proposed residual values in certain plants, and adopted in June 2020 a revision of Annex III of Regulation EC 396/2005: REGULATION (EU) 2020/749 of 4 June 2020 amending Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 as regards maximum residue levels for chlorate in or on certain products.
