Master’s 1 student or 4th-year engineering student with a background in process engineering (experience in food processing is a plus).
Desirable skills: Thermodynamics, thermal processes, technical-economic analysis, basic knowledge of LCA, Excel, and/or Python.
BACKGROUND
The agri-food industry still relies heavily on thermal processes powered by gas-fired boilers. In the context of decarbonization, electrification represents a strategic path forward, but its merits must be evaluated: electrical constraints, technological maturity, investment costs, on-site integration, effects on heat recovery, and environmental impacts.
EDF, AgroParisTech, and the CTCPA therefore wish to initiate an initial joint discussion on this topic, focusing on the canned food industry.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the internship are:
– State of the art regarding energy consumption and utilities (water, air, etc.) in the food processing industry, with a focus on the canning sector and pasteurization/sterilization processes.
– Inventory of the various plants and their locations throughout the region.
– Characterization of process operating parameters (temperature, pressure, flow rate, etc.).
Identification of the major product categories (fruit juices, vegetables, meat-based preparations, etc.).
– Description of the various technologies currently in use at the sites.
– Creation of a questionnaire for CTCPA members.
– Ongoing analysis of responses to refine market monitoring and state-of-the-art research.
