Introduce us to Plantes & Fruits: structure, vision, values, products...
The Plantes & Fruits group was founded in 2019 by Jean-Raymond VANIER (director of PMA28) and Pierre-Yves COPY (director of FRUITOFOOD), uniting their shared values around sustainable agriculture and responsible development. Located mainly in the Centre-Val de Loire region, the group brings together four companies with complementary activities:
- PMA28 (founded in 1989) is a long-standing player in the medicinal and aromatic plant sector. Specializing in plant drying, the company offers a wide range of products for the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. It is also committed to a sustainable development approach that respects biodiversity.
- FRUITOFOOD (founded in 2002) specializes in the gentle dehydration of fruit and vegetables. Thanks to its innovative technology, the company also valorizes the by-products of this process. For example, the water extracted during dehydration is recovered and used in cosmetics. Dehydrated fruit is then sold to companies in the agri-food sector, such as cookie, chocolate, beverage and dietary supplement manufacturers.
- GATICHANVRE (founded in 2013) specializes in hemp processing for the construction and cosmetics sectors. Based in Prunay-sur-Essonne, the company works with around 110 producers across several départements, including Essonne, Seine-et-Marne, Eure-et-Loir and Loiret. In July 2021, GATICHANVRE joined the Plantes & Fruits group.
- HUILERIES DE BEAUCE (founded in 2021), located in Châteaudun, produces first cold-pressed vegetable oils and oilcakes from locally grown seeds, mainly organically grown.
Although the carbon audit was initiated by FRUITOFOOD, this initiative is part of a global dynamic within the Group, in particular due to the significant impact of PMA28 in this process.
In 2020, with the consolidation of our various entities, we structured our CSR approach by carrying out an initial assessment with Bureau Veritas, within the framework of ISO 26000 certification. This assessment enabled us to identify our strengths and areas for improvement.
When I arrived in 2022, we deepened and revised our entire CSR policy. Thanks to my CSR training, we've been able to define a clearer, more coherent strategy in line with the Group's challenges.
How did you come to contact the CTCPA? What were your needs? What were your objectives?
We had been talking internally for some time about carrying out a carbon assessment, as we felt it would be useful to have a clear and precise view of our greenhouse gas emissions. This would enable us to better understand our current practices, identify levers for improvement and target priorities for action.
As part of our CSR policy, we also looked for structures that might be able to provide us with a grant to carry out this process. This is how we came across BPI France's "Diag Décarbon'Action" scheme, which we felt was particularly relevant and comprehensive, not least because it offered us support from a specialist organization.
It was in this context that the CTCPA came in to help us carry out our carbon assessment.
How did the support go?
Initially, the process began at the end of 2023 with a project scoping meeting attended by Margaux COLOMBIN, Environmental Project Manager, and Grégoire CORDIER, Operations Manager.
Internally, several levels of stakeholders are involved in our CSR approach: entity management, the CSR COPIL (made up of managers responsible for CSR strategy), as well as intermediate pilots, who play a key role between employees and managers in the implementation of actions. We wanted to include all these players in the approach, which prolonged the process.
Data collection was also a challenge, not least because of the diversity of our sites and the geographical spread of our stakeholders. This required complex coordination and more time-consuming background work.
Margaux was very attentive and patient, particularly when faced with the many questions from our teams, who sometimes had difficulty interpreting certain documents and information. She helped us to gain autonomy on these subjects, even when certain notions were complex. Her support was crucial, especially on my return after an absence, when we had to resume file management.
At the end of the process, she was also a great help in publishing our carbon footprint on the ADEME platform, which is compulsory if you want to obtain the BPI France grant. Her advice and rigorous monitoring ensured smooth and efficient validation.
What is your assessment today? How are the benefits of this support manifesting themselves? What are your next objectives or announcements?
With regard to our carbon footprint, which covered FRUITOFOOD and PMA28, we carried out two separate analyses in order to better understand the situation of each company and identify the solutions best suited to our strategy.
By 2030, we have set ourselves a target of reducing our emissions by 10%. To achieve this, we have defined five main themes on which to focus our efforts:
1. raw materials and inputs,
2 Freight and logistics,
3 Energy,
4. equipment optimization,
5 Moving around.
A few weeks ago, we organized an initial working meeting to define the concrete actions to be implemented for each theme. We have appointed project leaders and set deadlines based on feasibility and available investment resources.
In addition, we are currently working on the deployment of quantified indicators that will enable us to track the progress of these actions year after year and adapt our strategy accordingly.
Other initiatives and prospects
Internally, we have produced an infographic detailing our commitments and highlighting our emissions, which are mainly concentrated in Scope 3. This is our main focus for the future.
However, we are aware of the constraints that exist and of the need to strike a balance between improving our practices and our overall performance. We are doing our best to make progress on these issues.
At present, our group has obtained several CSR certifications, and we are in the process of being assessed. ECOVADIS to further improve our practices. We also have other official assessments underway, such as SEDEX.
For the moment, we don't have a CSR label. We had obtained ISO 26000 certification, which was valid for one or two years, but we decided not to renew it. Instead, we decided to wait five years before carrying out a new assessment. However, we are now moving towards more recognized benchmarks that will be more relevant to our future strategy.
